I have updated this post to show the entire year (Oct 2011 – Sept 2012), of earthquakes world-wide >2.5 in magnitude; and you can see there is a steady, and then dramatic rise in the number of earthquakes through the year.  (This data was compiled on a daily basis by me from the USGS website)
